PIN Conference 2026: Multilateralism under Pressure: can International Negotiations still Deliver?
In April 2026, a panel discussion entitled "Multilateralism under Pressure: can International Negotiations still Deliver?" was held at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. It explored how multilateral negotiations are evolving and how these processes can operate to sustain cooperation in a more contested international environment.
Building on the 2024 conference “Redefining Multilateralism in a New Geopolitical Era,” this panel discussion shifted the focus from diagnosing the challenges facing multilateralism to examining how it is evolving in practice.
Multilateralism has long provided the foundation of global governance. Yet it is multilateral negotiations that increasingly determine whether cooperation succeeds. Geopolitical competition, institutional fragmentation, normative divides and innovation are reshaping how negotiations are conducted.
After opening remarks by Dr Tobias Vestner, Director of the Research and Policy Advice Department at the GCSP and PIN Member, highlighting the 40th anniversary of PIN and its many achievements, this event explored how multilateral negotiations are evolving and how these processes can operate to sustain cooperation in a more contested international environment.
The panelists were:
- Prof Mikhail Troitskiy, PIN Member and Visiting professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy
- Prof Fen Oslen Hampson, PIN Member and Chancellor's Professor at Carleton University
- Prof Valérie Rosoux, PIN Member and Professor in International Relations, University of Louvain
- Moderator: Ms Maréva Lietti-Roduit, Department Manager, Research and Policy Advice Department, GCSP
